raptors deal [and other deadline buzzer beaters]

According to the Yahoo! NBA Expert’s Blog, the Raptors have traded Juan Dixon to the Pistons for Primoz Brezec, a 28 year old former 1st round pick of the Pacers. While probably not a widely recognized name, I know of Brezec because I employed him as a member of my fantasy basketball team back in ’04-’05 when he was averaging 13 and 7.4 for the Bobcats. This seems to be a decent move for Toronto. For one, he’s white and European, so he’ll fit right in! Seriously folks, this would seem to, in some way, address their need for a big man to grab some rebounds, gobble up some minutes at the 4 and 5 position, and shore up things on the defensive end. Not an earth shattering move, but a solid addition presupposing that Carlos Delfino is set to step into more of the backup PG role that Dixon was holding down while Ford is injured.

This just in. The Cavs seem to be on the cusp of making three way deal that would land them Ben Wallace, Joe Smith Delonte and Wally Szczerbiak while giving up Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall and Ira Newble. Woah. A 33% turnover with 30 games left in the season. Ballsy move. A way of demonstrating to the league that the Eastern Conference Champs are serious about retaining their right to lose in the Finals in light of other recent blockbusters.

For my money, and as much as I hate to say it, I think that the team in line to benefit most from recent deals is the Lakers. Based on what they did last night to the Suns, and considering they are without their rising young star in Andrew Bynum, if Kobe’s pinky can hold up, they look like the team to beat, with potential to extand that window well past this year.
